Red Variable Stars in Three M81 Group Dwarf Galaxies

چکیده

Abstract Archival [3.6] and [4.5] images are used to identify characterize variable stars in the Magellanic-type galaxies Holmberg II, NGC 2366, IC 2574. Using parametric nonparametric detection methods, 74 confirmed or suspected long-period variables (LPVs) found. The period distributions of LPVs 2366 2574 similar. While distribution Ho II is uncertain due small number statistics, there appears be a deficiency with periods between 550 650 days when compared diffusely distributed on sky, do not follow underlying light from unresolved stars, as expected if episodes star formation within past few hundred megayears have occurred throughout galaxies, including their outer regions. Distances computed for period–luminosity relations (PLRs) agree ∼0.1 mag those based tip red giant branch (RGB). Efforts estimate an LPV-based distance modulus complicated by presence first overtone pulsators among <600 days, although PLR at end consistent estimated RGB-tip. In addition LPVs, 10 candidate sgB[e] luminous blue two supergiant also identified. Nine that show evidence variability identified locations color–magnitude diagram.

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Luminous Red Stars in Local Group Dwarf Elliptical Galaxies: an Intermediate-age Population? 1

1 Based on observations made with the William Herschel Telescope operated on the island of La Palma by the Royal Greenwich Observatory in the Spanish Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos of the Instituto de Astrof sica de Canarias. ABSTRACT In this paper, we show that the optically bright stars above the tip of the rst red giant branch (TRGB) in the color magnitude (CM) diagrams of nearby dw...

Dwarf Elliptical Galaxies in the M81 Group: the Structure and Stellar Populations of Bk5n and F8d1

The M81 group is one of the nearest groups of galaxies, but its properties are quite different from those of the Local Group. It has therefore provided a different environment for the evolution of its member galaxies. We have carried out a CCD survey of the M81 group to search for analogs to Local Group dwarf elliptical (dE) galaxies. All the M81 dwarfs previously identified in photographic sur...

The Recent Star Formation Histories of M81 Group Dwarf Irregular Galaxies

We present observations and analysis of nine dwarf irregular galaxies (dIs) in the M81 Group taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The nine galaxy sample (the Garland, M81 Dwarf A, DDO 53, Ho IX, Ho I, DDO 165, NGC 2366, Ho II, and IC 2574) spans 6 magnitudes in luminosity, a factor of 1000 in current star formation rate, and 0.5 dex in metallicity allowi...

Blue straggler stars in dwarf spheroidal galaxies

Blue straggler star (BSS) candidates have been observed in all old dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs), however whether or not they are authentic BSSs or young stars has been a point of debate. To both address this issue and obtain a better understanding of the formation of BSSs in different environments we have analysed a sample of BSS candidates in two nearby Galactic dSphs, Draco and Ursa Mino...
